Therapies

Therapies
At MCP, people supported receive therapeutic services both in their home and at the Lifelong Learning Program. These are essential services for promoting the individual’s well-being and ability to participate in the activities of daily living. Support Services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and Music Therapy.

Physical Therapy
Based on a comprehensive assessment conducted by MCP’s licensed Physical Therapist and Certified Physical Therapy Assistant an individualized plan is developed. Individual plans encompass functional and therapeutic positioning, gross motor and range of motion exercises to loosen contracted extremities, increase muscle strength, and promote physical wellbeing. MCP is home to an adaptive equipment department and specialists who fabricate training aids, individual positioning devices, and equipment to promote assisted standing, walking and siting for persons needing support to engage in daily activities.

Occupational Therapy
MCP’s licensed occupational therapist conducts comprehensive assessment and engages individuals and activities to promote sensory processing development of fine and gross motor skills. With the use of adaptive equipment through custom fabrication and targeted range of motion, the occupational therapist promotes independence and aid in each person’s participation and activities of daily living.

Speech Therapy
The MCP speech therapist develops a plan to support the person’s needs. People supported are encouraged to communicate their needs, desires, and wishes. The speech therapist works with individuals to improve speech clarity and functional communication skills, to include the use of augmentive communication devices, needed for daily life. Focus is also placed on improved eating and swallowing skills to promote safety with the use of adapted equipment/techniques and appropriate diet textures.

Music Therapy
The Sound Haven Music department in collaboration with board certified Music Therapists (MT-BC), offer a plethora of music-related activities to further enrich the lives of the people supported through music and innovative adaptive technologies.

Art Therapy
Through the Creative Breakthrough Art Studio at the Lifelong Learning program the people we support are afforded the opportunity to draw, color, paint, sculpt and pretty much design, create, exhibit and sell anything that they believe to be Art.
Additional therapies offered at MCP, as appropriate to each person supported and availability.

Pet Therapy
Animal-assisted therapy that uses dogs or other animals has been reported to help people recover from or better cope with problems. At MCP, Pet Therapy has simply brought enjoyment and comfort.

Horse Therapy
Through the interdisciplinary approach at MCP, the individuals have participated in HIPPO Therapy, which is a treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement or Therapeutic/Adaptive Riding. Specifically, the people supported focus on un-mounted and mounted activities to build confidence, horse knowledge, social interaction and improved gross motor skills to include range of motion. Participation is either an individual or in a group setting, which can lead to Therapeutic Horseback riding.
